Lomography Month

We invite you to Lomography month beginning with Nico Stephou’s first
solo exhibition – Homewards , 6-12th of July

With subtle explosions of geographical intimacy, Nico Stephou attempts
to start the expedition that is Homewards. Looking in, with a coming
to terms with failure, disappointment, decadence and concepts of
beauty, it attempts to piece together a formation of these into a
state of ‘in and of itself’. As an inverse reification process,
Homewards attempts to take that which is there, concrete and real,
into that which lacks absolutism or assertion. Site-specifically,
Nicosia, is presented as a loss of concretion with a constant
movement. It’s going, it hasn’t arrived.

Opening hours
Monday to Thursday 5pm – 8pm
Friday 5pm – 9pm

skia cultural spot
Ippokratous 44, Laiki Gitonia
Nicosia
99889714

P.S
Lomography is the result of a low-tech and high tech plastic
photographic apparatus of extreme high light sensitivity. Its niche?
Acting as a fleeting third eye to your existence. The first ever (as
far as we are concerned) Lomography exhibitions in Cyprus are the
result of 6 people trying to follow and break down these rules:
1. Take your camera everywhere you go
2. Use it any time – day and night
3. Lomography is not an interference in your life, but part of it
4. Try the shot from the hip
5. Approach the objects of your Lomographic desire as close as possible
6. Don’t think (William Firebrace)
7. Be fast
8. You don’t have to know beforehand what you captured on film
9. Afterwards either
10. Don’t worry about any rules

ta koutsakotirka

“ta koutsakotirka”
As a meeting point between documentation and illustration, skias latest project is attempting to mix the living culture of Nicosia as comprised of both tangible and intangible elements with long-standing traditions and new adaptations to what once was.
Intending to introduce heritage to youth culture and youth culture to heritage, ta koutsakotirka emphasise the necessity of this interaction and this exchange. This project/exhibition consists of two parts.

Part 1 – Illustration exhibition from the 15th to the 20th of June (if you are interested in applying for participation to Part 1 email eleni@skiaculture.com or contact 99889714)
Part 2 – Group documentation / illustration of Nicosia and subsequent exhibition from the 20th to the 30th of June

For Part 2, the participants of Part 1 along with skia will hit the streets of Nicosia and document/illustrate its elements of living and demised culture. The purposes of the excursion will be continued at skia until the 22nd, where they can work on completing their illustrations at the workshop and hang the illustrations on the spot with the koutsakotirka. These processes will be documented.
All work will be available for sale.

Finally! Our chair workshops are ready!

YEEEY! Finally i have been able to find some decent priced workshops for our chair making process!

Mr. Kostakis has a workshop opposite the Omereye Tekke and will be teaching us how to make the traditional toneno seat (the seat of the chair made with the ‘tonos’ , wheat material)

The prices for the workshops are 35 euros an hour

There will be 4 sessions in one month, but you can opt to attend as many as you want depending on how fast you learn!

and the price to buy the skeleton of the chair without the seat (so that you can adjust the seat on) is 30 euros. (You could also bring your own old chairs if you have any and refurbish them!)

Additionally, you will need 7 euros for each batch of tonos you will use (one chair needs one batch)

Lessons start kso-paska (after easter) so please email me to inform me of your interest to attend the sessions as soon as possible

Cultural tours of Nicosia

As part of skia cultural spot’s master plan to show visitors to Nicosia the reasons why we love our city so much, we are now offering cultural tours of the inner walled city.

Ranging from culinary, to architecture, to living culture, skia cultural spot’s tours of Nicosia have one and only objective – to present a holistic view of the city within the walls.
We aim to present the city with unabated honesty, presenting its diversities, complexities, but never forgetting its appeal – its historical aestheticism and living culture

Feel free to contact us for more information.

Culture and the transmission of memory

Ron Eyerman : The Past in the Present : Culture and the transmission of memory

On the predication of skia cultural spot’s first official cultural tour of Nicosia on Monday the 18th, here is an article by acclaimed sociologist Ron Eyerman – The Past in the Present ; Culture and the Transmission of Memory , published by Acta Sociologica, June 2004.

To what extent does the past affect the present? does the cultural landscape of a place transmit the true history of the area? How is living culture affected by the vivacity and perseverance of constructed memory?

Mythscapes : memory , mythology and national identity

What kind of myth sustains our national identity? Why? Is national identity based on a constructed memory and constructed nostalgia?

This weeks article is somewhat different that the ones before. It targets how national identity is formed through myth , memory and nostalgia. The reason I am posting this article is owing to the importance of understanding how our world is formed around us , through what agencies and for which purposes.

Why is this important to skia cultural spot and for what we are trying to do? Cultural heritage vs contemporary society. How has Cypriot cultural heritage become its contemporary character? How MUCH of our history’s cultural heritage has become our identity? how selective has our history been with what was chosen as our identity? How much our cultural landscape is a result of mythmaking?

Can Cyprus find a fulfilling identity? One that doesn’t exclude any of its complex history and multi-layered and multicultural influences? What do you think? Feel free to comment
